victoria surkova tells the story of her mum through heartfelt snaps

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realise that this photo series by Victoria Surkova, So close that is far, is deeply personal. The Moscow-born shutterbug took the snaps after moving to Uganda, which she says “transformed” her relationship with her mum. “A new chapter of my life made me leave home and become more independent,” she says of the time. “Now, when I visit my mother very rarely, it makes me understand that I am losing touch with this place.”

It’s a melancholy feeling that anyone who lives away from their loved ones can relate to. Reflecting on this, Victoria decided to re-discover her mum through her personal belongings. The scattered buttons, old photographs, ceramic figurines and teacups tell a lovely story that Veronica captures perfectly in her sweet snaps.
