the centre for contemporary photography is hosting four exhibitions dedicated to motherhood
Mark your calendar – these shows are coming up rather soon.
Here's a lovely way for Melbourne folks to spend a day off: The Centre for Contemporary Photography in Fitzroy will soon be exhibiting four shows by talented Australian shutterbugs Ying Ang, Miriam Charlie, Odette England and Lisa Sorgini. While each project showcases experiences that many mums, carers and women can relate to, these stories aren’t often represented in the general media.Miriam Charlie, Orazio in the Phone Booth, 2022 © courtesy of the artist/N.Smith Gallery.
Ying Ang’s The Quickening, for example, highlights the feelings of anxiety and claustrophobia that can come with becoming a mum for the first time – as well as the immense feelings of love and joy. Yanyuwa Garrwa artist Miriam Charlie’s series Getting to Borroloola, meanwhile, explores the experience of reconnecting with family and Country after COVID.
The shows kick off on January 27th and you’ll have until April 9th to take a peek. During that period, the Centre for Contemporary Photography will also host a series of panel discussions and workshops, including a live event with Ying, Odette and Lisa on January 28th at 2pm.
