last meals on death row

last meals on death row

By

In this artful photo series, New Zealand shutterbug Henry Hargreaves recreates the last meals of death row inmates.

Henry Hargreaves reckons the last meal tradition for death row inmates is pretty weird. “It’s a remnant of an earlier era,” he writes of the death penalty. “[Then there's] this little bit of civility, ‘Hey, we are going to kill you, but what would you like to eat?’” As someone who’s always loved things that are both mundane and extraordinary, the New Zealand-based shutterbug couldn’t resist bringing these meals to life and representing them visually. Through the process of creating this photo series, No Seconds, Henry found himself identifying, albeit momentarily, to the prisoners through food. Scroll through some of the images below, then see them all over on Henry’s website.
