These mesmerising painted staircases are the work of talented Peruvian artist Xomatok. His colourful geometric designs are inspired by traditional Andean fabrics and blankets – particularly the lovely handwoven shawls known as llicllas.

With the help of a few friendly local residents, Xomatok recently painted 13 staircases in Alisos de Amauta, Lima, Peru, over the course of two months. The project is part of a wider government-led initiative that is seeing artists and community members transform staircases and retaining walls across different parts of Lima, in an effort to reflect cultural memory and bring art into communities. How cool is that?
