jess coldrey’s postcards aim to inspire victorians to volunteer

Here’s a sweet project to brighten your day: Melbourne artist and former frankie Good Stuff finalist Jess Coldrey has made a series of postcards to encourage young Victorians to get outdoors and volunteer in the state’s many parks.

Jess says she was inspired to make the postcards – which incorporate 3D scanning, painting and collage – following a chinwag with park rangers. “I wanted to focus on the small, sometimes-missed details that make our ecosystems unique, like wildflowers or specific species only found in certain areas,” she says. “So, I incorporated colours and shapes referencing different parks into the designs."

After numerous extreme and devastating natural events in recent years, Jess reckons volunteering can give young people a sense of hope. “Volunteering can help build a connection to your area, inspire you to explore somewhere new, or make you feel like you have a role to play in the big-picture environmental challenges we're experiencing,” she says. "The idea is that people will stumble across the cards, pick one up and hopefully send it to a friend sharing the details of volunteer opportunities in their area.”

Keep an eye out for Jess’s rad postcards in cafes, galleries and community centres across the state. For more info about volunteering, have a squiz at Parks Victoria’s website.
