It’s true: making your own duds bloody rules. If you’ve recently taken up sewing, you might have discovered the big community of fellow sewists online, along with the independent pattern companies designing cool styles for crafty folks around the world. There’s just one problem: not all sewing patterns cater to plus sizes.
Christchurch-based sewist Jess (more commonly known as @fat.bobbin.girl) realised this when she first began sewing in 2017. She’d turned to making her own clothes due to the lack of ethical options for plus-sized women in mainstream clothing stores – it sucked to realise she was excluded in the maker community, too.
Thankfully she persevered, seeking out the small number of inclusive pattern brands until she and fellow maker Leila launched their own company in 2019. Now she helps run Muna and Broad full-time, selling easy sewing patterns for plus-sized sewists. She also runs Fat Sewing Club, a blog where anyone who identifies as fat is welcome to share their thoughts on fashion, beauty and the making process. It's a killer resource for any sewist who's ever found themselves sidelined by restrictive patterns, and hosts great round-ups of beginner-friendly, plus-size patterns, too. Cheers to that!
