brandi salmon’s arty aunties

By

Brandi Salmon was completing her Bachelor of Creative Arts at university when she realised there was a severe lack of Blak representation in mainstream contemporary art and historical art. To express her frustrations (and taking inspiration from Aboriginal artist Gordon Bennett’s work, Possession Island), Brandi created her Aunty Collection – a series of paintings which critique the lack of Aboriginal representation throughout art history.

Through the collection, Brandi takes famous artworks, including Frida Kahlo’s Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird, Leonardo Davinci's Mona Lisa, Johannes Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring and Sandro Botticelli's The Birth of Venus, and recreates them with an Aboriginal twist (and loads of talent). Find more of Brandi’s work by popping over to her website, and keep scrolling to watch her impressive painting process.
