In the little Polish town of Zalipie, houses and community buildings have long been covered in colourful flower paintings. No one’s quite sure how it all started, but the story goes something like this: over a century ago, women began painting their houses white to cover up soot marks from chimneys. They wanted their places to look spick and span in preparation for religious festivals, and eventually, one genius took it a step further, painting intricate blooms over pesky marks and kicking off a trend. The tradition lives on today, with yearly flower-painting competitions and a host of local painters sent out to touch up old patterns all over town.
