tunesday – 9 artists to keep an ear out for at bigsound
Crank up the volume on these up-and-coming artists.
This September 2nd to 5th, BIGSOUND – the country’s biggest meeting of artists, industry players and media – will be taking place around Brisbane/Magandjin’s Fortitude Valley. While the event is primarily for artists to create connections with the industry’s network, it’s also a one-stop-shop for anyone wanting to discover their new favourite musician. Fret not if you're not heading to BIGSOUND though, you can spy our picks of artists to check out at home below.
AMA Sri Lankan-Australian singer-songwriter Ama is in possession of the kind of vocal range that is far beyond her age. The 22-year-old artist cascades across her indie-pop tunes with intricate lyricism and banging choruses.
BADASSMUTHA Get ready to groove with BADASSMUTHA. The Githabul, Migunberri-Yugumbeh, Gamilaroi woman has a knack for creating tracks that slip into your pores and burrow straight into your bloodstream.
CHARLI LUCAS If you’re a fan of music that sounds like it’s been made in the intimacy of a bedroom – posters splashed across the wall and photographs framing dusty mirrors – you’ll be a big fan of Charli Lucas. She’s already making noise in the indie-pop scene, so jump on the bandwagon before it’s too late.
COAST ARCADE Fuzzy guitars and gritty vocals take centre stage in Coast Arcade’s music. This Kiwi indie-rock band from Aotearoa is coming across the pond and – frankly – Aussies better watch out. Expect catchy hooks and intoxicating riffs.
DANI ENLI Pop girlies: unite. Dani Enli’s sugary tunes and incredible vocal range will take you from spinning circles in the club to dancing in your bedroom. The artist’s blend of pop and R&B draws inspiration from some of the biggest names in pop.
GEORGIA KNIGHT This musician’s art can’t be pinned down to any one genre – and you wouldn’t even want to try. A master of the autoharp, Georgia’s avant-garde approach to music is like a breath of fresh air on the soundwaves.
JAMES RANGE BAND The up-and-coming James Range Band will have you squirming right out of your earphones with their soul-stirring tunes. Creating music that surpasses language barriers as they sing in both English and Pitjantjatjara, these folk are undoubtedly ones to watch in the music scene.
ROBERT BAXTER If you have your finger on the pulse of the music scene, you’ve no doubt already heard Robert Baxter’s music. The Taiwanese artist is making a name for themselves in the industry, and there’s no doubt that their BIGSOUND showcase will be just another feat of show-stopping pop festivities.
THEETH While some 17-year-olds spend their free time playing sport and practicing dance routines with their pals, high schooler Thea Sholl is making music under the name of Theeth. Don’t let her youth fool you, though – this teenager rocks like a careered master.
