the frankie team's favourite things about starting a new year

Slowing down, living in the moment and setting zero resolutions are some of our 2021 plans.

Oh, January, the month of optimism, making plans, rearranging furniture and um, welcoming hot cross buns to the supermarket shelves (what's up with that?).

As you know, dearest friends, we’re not ones to set grandiose goals for the 12 months ahead. But there are some small things that bring us great joy in the early days of a new year – like starting a new Netflix series and finally investing in a nice biscuit tin.

Without further ado:

“I just love how things slow down! I love the really long daylight hours, time spent outside and less expectations from the 'outside' world.” – Casey, junior designer.

“I love the summer nights vibe early in the new year – it’s this special point in time where everyone is relaxed, smiling and living in the moment!” – Molly, partnerships manager.

“Though I’m not a big fan of new year’s resolutions (let’s be real, they just set us up for failure), there’s something about kicking off a new year that feels fresh and light and full of possibility. It’s super-motivating. I also love that moment of opening a new diary and filling in all the important dates: family birthdays, planned holidays, even deadlines and when bills are due!” – Sophie, editor.

“I’m one of those unfortunate people who crave change so I use the post-decoration chaos as an excuse to rearrange my whole house. Every inch of it, even that space under the sink. I also revel in doing a proper ‘big shop’ after the kitchen cupboards have been well and truly desolated over the holidays.”  – Jess, marketing manager.

“'I always get new drum students in January. I love that the new year inspires some people to fill the rest of it with music." – Lizzie, production and admin coordinator.

"I'm a total cheeseball, so I really look forward to soaking up those spectacular summer sunsets, even if it's just while I'm walking home from the supermarket. Something about the long evenings makes me feel at peace." – Emma, assistant editor and online editor

“I love how so many people start the year with a sense of optimism and hope for making things better.” – Gaye, general manager.

"My favourite thing about starting this new year is watching my home garden grow. Summer is about the only time I'm productive with my garden space, so I'm really looking forward to tending to all the freak veggie plants that have accidentally sprouted due to trench composting." – Anj, senior designer
