battenberg cake
There’s no denying that checkerboard prints are everywhere right now, from trendy duds to cool homewares. It’s not exactly surprising, then, to see the Battenberg cake make a bit of a comeback. A classic English treat, the marzipan-covered sponge reveals a pretty pink and white check pattern once sliced. Its origins are unclear, though it’s believed that cake was first made to honour the marriage of Princess Victoria and Prince Louis of Battenberg in 1884. To give this royal dessert a go, head over to Great British Chefs for Sally Abé's recipe. Note: you can bake both batters side-by-side in the same tin as the recipe states (the colours don’t really bleed into one another) or you can choose to bake in separate tins to be safe.
