Runways dedicated to the Y2K aesthetic, a bunch of fab workshops and clothes made from mushrooms? Count us in.

Finally, the most fab event in every fashion-loving Melburnian’s calendar is finally here: Melbourne Fashion Week! The program for this year – which is running from October 23rd to October 29th – is full to the brim with runway shows, workshops, discussion panels and exhibitions that all celebrate the city’s unique creative community. Have a read down below of some of our picks to check out for this year’s MFW.   

FASHION X THEATRE Made in partnership with arguably the most glitzy musical of all time – Moulin Rouge! The Musical – this runway and performance features a wide array of fantastical fashion pieces that explore the ideas of truth, beauty, freedom and love as well as the classic myth of Orpheus and Eurydice.

UNDERGROUND RUNWAY Featuring a cast of some of our favourite designers like Clothing The Gaps, Erik Yvon and Maroske Peech, this runway celebrates all of the glam of the noughties while still showcasing Melbourne’s current underground culture and designs.

STUDENT COLLECTIONS RUNWAY This fan-favourite event features all of the best designs from fashion students and follows the themes of determination, adaptability and carving your niche. If you’re keen to see some of tomorrow’s most beloved designers at the beginning of their careers then we definitely recommend adding this to your itinerary.

ANCIENT TALES RETOLD This rad event is part runway and part dance performance that shows off the innate beauty of traditional Chinese attire, as it explores how fashion, ideology, social class and femininity transformed across multiple dynasties.

THE WILDLIFE-FREE FUTURE OF FASHION Hosted by a bunch of smart folks exploring new ways of including sustainability in the Australian fashion industry, this free event discusses how a cruelty-free and ethical future can be achieved.

WTF! WEAR THE FUNGI EXHIBITION BY MYCL Speaking of sustainability, this free event is a discussion and exhibition of brands with collections featuring Mylea Mycelium leather (AKA, mushroom leather) as well as a workshop on how you can make your own leather goods with the material.

GANBU MARRA RUNWAY AT THE LUME Featuring a healthy heaping of super-fab First Nations fashion talent, this runway also includes light projections from THE LUME’s Connection show that uses visual storytelling to tell our country’s rich Indigenous history. 

101 COLLINS STREET RUNWAY This runway – presented inside the luxe walls of 101 Collins Street – includes much-loved high-end brands such as Aje, nevenka, BEC + BRIDGE, Ngalia and heaps more, and is bound to make you feel just that extra bit fancy.

Melbourne Fashion Week will run from October 23rd to October 29th.
