get to know our issue 115 poster artist, carla scotto

Carla Scotto's native-inspired art shows off all the unique beauty of Australia's flora and fauna.

Tell us a little bit about yourself – what kind of art do you make and where are you based? I’m a Naarm/Melbourne-based illustrator, painter, designer and 2D animator and, like my titles, I can’t stick to one thing! I do it all, from naive little angsty cartoons to precise and carefully calculated acrylic paintings of native flora and fauna.

What was your process for creating the artwork that is featured in issue 115? I sketched a lot of drafts before I committed to the canvas, carefully mapping out all the borders and triple checking measurements (the oval was the hardest to freehand). Then layers and layers, and I mean, LAYERS of acrylic paint for every single colour and inch of linework.

Magpies – friend or foe? I’ve always loved magpies, I had one around the house when I was younger. And I love all creatures except for the Pee-wee that attacked my face and sent me rushing to get a tetanus shot several years ago.

What are your preferred mediums to use and why? I’m very comfortable with digital art but I was taught on oils growing up and have since shifted to acrylic paint. I prefer acrylic because even though it dries faster than oils, you don’t get the fumes.

You’ve often used your art to communicate your stance on various social and political issues. Why? I really wanted to create meaning in my life and work, so I was keen to dip my feet into a lot of passion projects and great causes. I wanted my work to be useful to others rather than just aesthetically pleasing.

Where can we see more of your work? I have some painted pieces in the works that will be available in the coming weeks, so if you’d like to hear about them first you can sign up to my (well-designed) emails or see my shop over here. Also, here's my Instagram!
